IT industry in India has been one of the most significant growth contributors for the Indian economy. The industry has played a significant role in transforming India’s image from a bureaucratic economy to a land of innovative entrepreneurs with world class technology solutions. The industry has significantly contributed to the GDP, foreign exchange earnings and employment generation. One of the most commonly used acronyms in the world of education is IT; still very few actually know what this field is all about. In a layman’s word, this is a study which covers the use of computer systems. Perhaps that is why IT has become a synonym of computers for a common man. However, IT has many more things to offer and is not just confined to the boundaries of the computer system and is used to study the use of varied systems, such as telecommunications. According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s dictionary, Information Technology is “the study or use of electronic equipment, especially computers, for storing, accessing, analysing and sending information”. This means that the students choosing this field have to deal with many things like the infrastructure, development, storage, processing, and networking of devices apart from exchanging various forms of electronic data and its security. In fact, security has become a major threat to the future of IT. The IT sector has become a rapidly growing industry, with increasing demand for work force. Every business is looking forward to computerise their business activities, which results in more demand for software professionals and engineers. Indian firms, across all other sectors, largely depend on the IT service providers to make their business processes efficient. In fact, the Indian manufacturing sector has the highest IT spending followed by automotive, chemicals and consumer products industries. Indian IT companies, especially top firms such as Infosys, TCS, Infosys and Wipro, have been competing against top global firms such as IBM, Accenture and EDS for large mandates. However, India continues to remain a hub for cost effective technology operations. Further, Nasscom has maintained its growth projection of 16-18 per cent for the sector in this fiscal. Career opportunities As major IT firms are evolving continuously in a dynamic market to address the complex demands of clients in a highly competitive environment, there is a growing requirement for talent pool that has the skills to deliver value-added and unique solutions. Not only the industry offers numerous job opportunities but also tries to follow diverse employment practices and encourages people with different skill sets, abilities and qualifications to work together. Further, software developers in the IT industry work with content providers, graphic designers for creating the end product. Most software developers are also offered competitive salaries, depending upon their experience and educational qualifications. Jobs in IT sector are also driven by need to cater to different industry segments as well. Almost every industry (Banking, engineering, health, manufacturing, management consulting, mining, etc.) needs people to manage, use, network or create computer programs, thereby, creating huge demand for IT professionals.
